I want to be optimistic about being a welder my dad is a super big inspiration but it's so hard with people saying it was the worst career choice or all the side effects of welding for long periods of time.

Keevin Dabreo 08/08/2021 - 19:14

Bro better you find a different career, I have been a certified welder working on ships for about 20years and you are you are nothing but a slave with the kind of damage you do to you body and the risk associated and also how toxic that job is plus I'm telling you now you will not have time for your family and women will leave you because it's a time consuming job and you will never get rich just stressed!!!!!

And we know today that the materials used for shipbuilding can cause cancer, especially Chrome 6. We must also only use a respirator for 3 hours a day here in our latitude. So take care out there with your work environment.

🤣🤣🤣 Fun video… Industrial welding is one of the most dangerous and difficult job in metal industry…It is not garage welding my friends…Come to Europe to see how in most firm's welders are like slaves, welding(grinding, preparing, fixing, cleaning) 10 to 12 hours a day, payed low(for the job type). Welding CJP groves with very high parameters, entering in small holes, welding in positions that you can even imagine. And on top of that every body around you thinks that welding is a simple job…

henmich 08/08/2021 - 19:14

Want a reality check? Realize the Hyundai ship yards pump out 90 large shipping vessels every year.. the 1200 ft kind. Let that sink in… That's a 1200 ft ship every 3.5 days non stop. HOW?????? Every time I see welding like this, I can't believe productivity like that.

Sivan Sharma 08/08/2021 - 19:14

The title needs a correctly placed hyphen. I thought I was about to see a giant ship-welding machine, but instead got a large-ship welder…

Lorenz Mielke 08/08/2021 - 19:14

Nothing wrong with working physically hard! 💪😎

I'm a welder and have been for just a few years and love it, but can tell you that working on ships is not something you want to do. That looked like dual shield flux core. Your vision and lungs are going to disapear a few years into doing that kind of thing, not to mention the extreme heat, tight spaces and LOW PAY. Get into remote welding, mine work or pipe welding is you really want to have a good time.

Also, i'm just going to be honest here, wire feed welding is not that difficult. I think the knack to it is a little overblown. Get into heavy stick welding and tig work if you want to see your potential

I worked a season in a shipyard, best welding job of my life. Some advice

-It's an extremely ego driven industry. Expect to hear endless stories about how people were welding since they were 8 and are just working this until their $80/hr pipeline job kicks off in the spring. Don't associate with people who tell you this.
-50-60% are heavy drug users. It doesn't impair your ability to weld.
-Nobody will take care of safety for you. Nobody will hold your hand. You could weld shirtless and nobody will stop you. Wear your fucking PPE at all times for your own good. You have the right to refuse unsafe work
-You are completely expendable to the company
-Beleive 0% of what management tells you and 50% of what they show you
-There WILL be layoffs. Don't get a $70,000 truck on finance and you won't sweat them so much.
-Network with anyone who will talk to you. You don't know when the rug gets pulled out from under you.
-Don't go above or beyond what you're asked to do. There's no trophy waiting for you in the locker room.
-You don't know more than your foreman.

Going on my 3rd year welding in a ship yard in Texas. Long hours cold nights hot days confined spaces. This video makes it look like a dream job.

James Kennedy 08/08/2021 - 19:14

Thumbs down on this video. This is nothing like what it really is. I don't care if this guy is married or taking Pinky Do Kung-Fu. Has nothing to do with Welding. Crap Mini Doc.
