On April 11, 2014, we marked 11 years of full-time RVing. After all this time, we’ve learned an awful lot about how live in an RV and manage its systems. But that doesn’t mean we haven’t made mistakes.

Would capping the hoses have the same effect? Our hot water knob broke and I capped the hoses. Tried to take a shower over the weekend & it was hot for about 6 seconds then ran ice cold.

Thank you for this video. I’ve been struggling with my water heater all weekend. It wasn’t the same exact issue with the shower but I had the wrong valve turned on my water heater and the hot and cold were mixing. All better now.

The. Problem with our water heater was the control board was letting the heater to heat the water the first time but did not restart when the water got cold. We had to replace the board to get back to normal operation..

RV sellers should give everyone dvd's with troubleshooting tips to save people a lot of time, trouble and money. Another important water heater tip…. If you have a pull along travel trailer you should turn your electric hot water switch off while disconnected from water, lack of water will burn the heating element out when the electricity is plugged in. Not sure how drivables are configured, but if the fresh water tank is empty and the electric is running via house batteries, I would think the same applies.

Super helpful video I couldn’t get my heater to run hot water and it turned out to be this exact issue

Reply
Stephen 08/08/2021 - 12:14

This so cool. I had tahe same issue with the hot water. Spent all day working on the tank, new element, temp gauges and still no hot water, just warm. Turns out ther are four shut off valves in the back of the water tank. One of them blends into the cold water and was open. I closed it based on your story and BANG! Hot water. Thank y9ou so much for posting this. I was about to replace the whole tank!

Great tip! I have a BIG MONEY SAVING TIP for any of you who can benefit from it, When I wake up, 1st thing, I flip on my hot water heater, the water is HOT in 15-20 mins! After we've showered, and dishes are washed, I FLIP MY SWITCH OFF! The remaining water in the tank stays hot for hours, then once it's down to a warm, I don't turn on the cold when I wash my hands. By the time it's cold it's about 3pm. I flip the switch on for about 20 minutes around dinner time or if/when we need another shower. But NO MATTER WHAT! ONCE WE'RE DOWN FOR THE NIGHT THE HOT WATER TANK IS TOO! I have went from buying a tank of propane every 2 weeks… to a tank every 4 weeks!! Sometimes 5 weeks!! Depending on if I only turn it on for showers, or…. Leave it on thru the day. The savings have been astronomical! Also, when i connect my tank, I count the times it takes to fully open, then back off to 2/3 open & when my tank ignites, it isnt with so much force. Now I hear both of my neighbors tanks firing FULLY OPEN & sounding like rocketships taking off EVERY 20 MINS! BACK N FORTH! ALL NIGHT LONG & can't wait to suggest they can shut it off all nite! (and turn it back a little)

I got a call from a guy who's house hot water was running out right away. I knew something was up because this house had two full size water heaters hooked up together, also had a circulator so you would not have to wait for hot water. Someone had tapped into the supply side of the water heater line for the lawn sprinklers. Normally this would be cold water but here it was a mix of returning hot and cold. So he had been watering the yard with warm water every day

Thats how we learn. We make mistakes. Its best to back track everything when experiencing a problem. This can be anything. If you didn't have a problem before, then you can go back to where you were before the issue began. Many times I find it was something I did wrong.

Never to old to learn new tricks….Thank you..I fixed a friend's hot water problem and I was not completely sure of what I did as far as having the valves set in the right direction. You just confirmed that was probably all that was wrong luckily I only replaced the valves and the cost was minamel.

Thanks so much for this! You saved me I'm living in my RV right now due to covid19 and living situation. Took a cold shower today but sink water was hot. I watched your video and it fixed my problem. I had just dumped my rv tanks and used the outdoor shower to clean up the area and sure enough left the water valves on. You saved me more than you know. Thanks so much for this video!
